Hepatitis B and C

Structure of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV)
Enveloped virus with an icosahedral capsid and a circular partly
double-stranded DNA.
The envelope contains the HBs Ag (S: surface)
The nucleo capsid is composed of the HBcAg (C: core)
complexed
with a polymerase (P) and the viral genome

Hepatitis C
• Hepatitis C:
– Flaviviridae family; hepacivirus genus
– positive RNA, enveloped virus, icosahedral capsid
– Gene encodes 10 proteins including
• 3 structural proteins : (C (core), E1 and E2 (envelope)
• 2 non structural proteins: NS5a (transcription regulator) and
Vpol (resistance to IFN)
– Several genotypes with varying severity and resistance to IFN.
Most resistant is genotype 1
