It's not difficult to comprehend why people are afraid of being alone: the empty flat after work, the creepy atmosphere on Sundays, the feeling of exclusion throughout the holidays... We are acutely aware of the pain associated with independence.

The astronomically expensive price exacted on the other side of the equation is significantly less commonly understood and less eloquently or regularly expressed. The fear of being alone, or more commonly just the phobia of it, may be the root of more unhappy relationships, stunted psychological growth, claustrophobia, and pent-up misery than almost any other. It is, by any measure, one of the major causes of human misery and the inspiration behind some of our most important and regrettable choices.
