Bonnie and Clyde visited home on Easter in 1934. It was April 1, and they’d arranged to meet in the middle of nowhere at the intersection of Hwy 114 and Dove Road several miles outside of Grapevine. The visit did not go as planned and when the dust settled two Texas Highway patrolmen lay dead. They were 26 year old Ed Wheeler and HD Murphy, who was 22. It was Murthy’s first day after training, and to this day he remains the youngest Texas Highway patrolman to die in the line of duty and he also holds the record for having served on the force for the shortest amount of time before his death. This video was filmed at the very intersection where this tragedy occurred. Additionally the video contains footage and images filmed at the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame, where the belongings of Patrolman Wheeler are on display. His widow Doris, later became a Special Ranger who went undercover to bust illegal gambling rings. She carried her late husband’s service revolver in her purse on every mission.
