The Phoney Test Challenge

Don’t be the dummy in the room!

Did you know that internationally, all mobile phones are tested for safe use by humans on a plastic dummy called SAM (Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequin)? It would be like testing the safety of food by spoon-feeding it to a doll, or testing if a skin care product will react to human skin by smearing it on a prosthetic arm. Pointless!

Here’s how the SAM test works (i.e doesn’t work):
The head of a plastic dummy is filled with liquid and subjected to 6 minutes of phone usage. If the liquid heats up by one degree then it is considered unsafe. But you see, the test is flawed because SAM’s head is based on a 100kg, six-foot-tall, adult male military recruit, plus you know, PLASTIC! Does that describe you? We didn’t think so. Also, how often are you using your phone? We’re going to take a stab in the dark and say a whole lot longer than 6 minutes.

SAM is a phoney (literally) and so is the test:
The 100kg military recruit that SAM’s modelled on only represents 3% of the population yet the test approves the safety of mobile phones for 100% of the population (including children). That’s a whopping 97% of people who are not represented. Imagine if the same safety standards were applied to the safe use of seat belts in cars. Would you feel safe knowing they would only be effective in saving 3% of people? Yeah, us neither.

Introducing The Phoney Test Challenge.
Let’s show the telco industry just how ridiculous this test is!

Here’s how it works:
1. Grab a plastic item from around your home like a water bottle, a kiddie pool, a water balloon, or a mop bucket, the more creative the better. The only criteria is that it doesn’t have a heartbeat, brain cells, organs, bones or skin. (FYI SAM doesn’t have any of those things either, just sayin’).
2. Test your phone usage on it. Note what happens (we’re gonna guess not much).
3. Upload and tag @wearenotsam via your Instagram or Tik Tok and use #phoneychallenge.
4. Get creative! The more outrageous the better!
