Since reclaiming Kherson, authorities are realising how much infrastructure the Russians sabotaged before retreating. Russia has been targeting Ukraine’s power grid and other infrastructure for weeks, as part of a tactic to break their opponent's morale.

Ukraine is known for its harsh winters, and Kyiv is already covered in snow. Without power, authorities fear Kherson will become uninhabitable during the cold weather.

It left millions of Ukrainians without light, heat or water with temperatures expected to reach as low as -20C.

But as residents evacuate Kherson, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns more than half of the country’s energy facilities have been damaged by Russian missile strikes.
