FIVE people are dead, including an off-duty officer, after a "juvenile" gunman opened fire in a Raleigh neighborhood on Thursday.

Two others were wounded before cops closed in on the suspect, who was taken into custody almost five hours after the first calls about an active shooter.
Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said that the gunfire first rang out at around 5pm local time on the Neuse River Greenway.

At 9.40pm, the police department announced that the suspect, described as a juvenile, was in custody.

Police surrounded an ambulance believed to have been carrying the shooting suspect as it arrived at the Wake Medical Center Emergency Room after his capture.

A K-9 officer was among two people who were being treated at the hospital as efforts to arrest the suspect were underway.

The officer was later released but the other shooting survivor remained in critical condition, authorities said.

No details about the age or identity of the shooter or his injuries have been revealed.

"This is a sad and tragic day for the City of Raleigh," Baldwin said.
