A shallow 5.6-magnitude earthquake shook Indonesia's main island Java on Monday, killing at least 46 people and injuring 700, local officials said, with buildings damaged and a landslide triggered.

The quake was centred in the Cianjur region of West Java, according to the United States Geological Survey, and was felt as far away as the capital of Jakarta, where panicked residents ran into the streets.

"The latest data, 46 people were killed. Victims kept coming from many areas. Around 700 people were injured," Herman Suherman, the head of the administration in Cianjur town in West Java, told broadcaster Kompas TV.

According to Indra Gustari, head of West Java’s regional Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, currently there is no tsunami threat yet caution should be exercised because of potential aftershocks.

Broadcasters showed several buildings in Cianjur with their roofs collapsed and debris lining the streets.

*Indonesia straddles the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire", a highly seismically active zone where different plates on the earth's crust meet and create a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.*
