Several dozen LGBT activists on Saturday (November 19) protested outside Qatar’s London embassy in support of gay rights ahead of the start of the World Cup in the the small Gulf nation.

With chants of ‘Shame on Qatar, shame on FIFA’ the protesters criticised the organisers of the World Cup for allowing the tournament to be hosted in a country that did not recognise LGBT rights and fails to recognise many human rights.

Same-sex relations are punishable by up to three years of jail-time in Qatar.
