Why is Perfidy a war crime?

Perfidy is the act of invoking the protections of the Geneva Convention with the intent to betray. This could mean faking surrender or using an internationally protected symbol like a red cross or red crescent to transport ammunition or troops.

Rules for war exist so that some humanity and compassion can still exist. These rules also reduce casualties and misunderstandings. It is important that they be followed by all parties.
