Many cat owners naively believe that there’s no way their precious little kitty might be sexting. “She’s too young!” an owner might say. “He’s too innocent!” “Cats don’t know how to use cell phones!” But if you think your cat isn’t sharing naked pictures of themselves online right now, you are kittenyourself! Studies show that almost half of all cats in American households have sent or received at least one sexually explicit text message or photo within the past year. Some kitties do it because they want to be popular, others because another cat pressures them into it. Regardless of the reason, these are not bad cats. They are young and misguided, and often don’t realize sexting can have grave consequences that will follow them for the rest of their nine lives.

Sexting can also have profound legal repercussions. Many kittens who send and receive sexts are underage, and even if they’re willing participants, legally they cannot give consent. The bottom line is that distributing these images is kitty porn, and texting a racy picture to a friend could easily get your cat registered as a sex offender! Many cat owners are reluctant to spy on their cat’s cell phone, hesitate to demand random inspections of it, or are uncomfortable with taking it away completely. However, these are all measures you can and should enact if you suspect your kitten is sexting. Remember: you are doing this for their own good, and making sure they’re safe and responsible is simply being purrudent!
