Gianni Versace established his first store in Milan in 1978 after having an idea for a new clothing line. He had 130 high-end boutiques around the world by 1997, and his net worth was $807 million.

He was well-known for his vividly coloured creations, but he went beyond the realm of fashion with his clever strategy of enlisting A-list celebrities as his brand's front-row supporters and working with supermodels to do it. He also invited Madonna and Elton John to the front row of his fashion shows.

Versace, together with his siblings Donatella and Santo, managed a high-stakes empire, so he needed a place to unwind and retreat. In 1991, he travelled with South Beach in Miami Beach.
