Elon Reeve Musk FRS (/ˈiːlɒn ˈmʌsk/; born June 28, 1971, South Africa) is an American entrepreneur, inventor, and business magnate. He is founder, CTO, and CEO of SpaceX;[12] CEO and production architect of Tesla, Inc.; founder of The Boring Company; and also the founder of Neuralink and OpenAI. With estimated earnings of around US$240 billion as of April 2022,[13] Musk is the richest person in the world according to both the Bloomberg Biilionaires Index and Forbes.[14][15]

After attending commerce at Queen's School of Business for two years, Musk earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania[16] and a bachelor's degree in physics.[16] Musk Continues to Study Ph.D. Physics to Stanford University in 1995 but only attended classes for 2 days to continue his career by founding Zip2, Musk also played a role in the founding of PayPal.[17][18] Musk has three nationalities namely South Africa, Canada and the United States.

Musk is the founder of several popular technology companies, including SpaceX which is engaged in space technology; Tesla Inc. engaged in the automotive sector; OpenAI, SolarCity, Neuralink, as well as several other companies. Musk stated that he founded these companies with the aim of changing the world and human life, including reducing global warming through increasing the production and consumption of renewable energy. He also hopes to reduce the "risk of extinction of humanity" by improving the technology to live on other planets, particularly on Mars.

SpaceX
Main article: SpaceX
Musk founded his third company, Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), in June 2002[34] and serves as CEO and CTO. SpaceX develops and manufactures space gliders while advancing rocket technology. The company's first two launch vehicles were the Falcon 1 and Falcon 9 rockets. Its first spacecraft was the Dragon.[35]

SpaceX won a $1.6 billion NASA contract on December 23, 2008 for 12 flights of the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station, replacing the Space Shuttle program after it was discontinued in 2011. Initially, the Falcon 9/Dragon would replace the Shuttle's cargo-carrying functions and astronaut transportation will be handled by Soyuz. However, SpaceX had designed the Falcon 9/Dragon with astronaut transport capabilities and the Augustine commission recommended that astronaut transport be handled by a commercial company such as SpaceX.[36]

Musk[permanent off link] claims to be influenced by the Isaac Asimov Foundation series[37] and views space exploration as a key step towards expanding and preserving human life.[38] Musk said that multiplanetary life could reduce threats to the survival of the human species. "Asteroids or supervolcanoes could wipe us out, and we face risks the dinosaurs never experienced: Engineered viruses, accidental creation of micro black holes, global warming or some mysterious technology that could end our survival. Humanity evolved over millions of years, but in the last sixty years, atomic weapons have given rise to the potential to annihilate ourselves. Sooner or later, we must extend human existence beyond this green and blue ball—or we will be annihilated." Musk's goal is to reduce the cost of human spaceflight by one-tenth.[39] He founded SpaceX with $100 million of his own wealth. He still serves as CEO and CTO of this Hawthorne, California-based company.[40]

In the span of seven years, SpaceX designed the Falcon family of gliders and the multi-purpose Dragon spacecraft from the ground up. In September 2009, the SpaceX Falcon 1 rocket became the first privately owned liquid-fueled probe to place a satellite in Earth orbit. NASA selected SpaceX as part of the first program to entrust private companies with delivering cargo to the International Space Station. This contract, with a minimum value of $1.6 billion and a maximum value of $3.1 billion, is a turning point in accessing cargo shipments to and from the space station. In addition to these services, SpaceX's goal is to lower the cost of orbital spaceflight and improve reliability on a sequential basis, as well as create reusable orbital gliders. In the following years, Musk will focus on sending astronauts to the International Space Station, but he has also stated that his personal goal is to enable human exploration and colonization of Mars. In a 2011 interview, he expressed the hope of sending humans to the surface of Mars within the next 10–20 years.[41] On May 25, 2012, the SpaceX Dragon probe docked at the ISS, making SpaceX the first commercial company to launch and dock its probe at the International Space Station.[42]
