Bugs, Honey, and Prophecy (Matthew 3:3) - Episode 3 (S1) - Drippings from the Honeycomb Podcast

John the Baptist was a man with a specific mission, filled with the Holy Spirit, and a prophet. In fact, Jesus said that John was the greatest prophet, the forerunner for the Messiah, and even the fulfillment of the second coming of Elijah! Matthew correctly identified that John fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy about the forerunner of the Messiah. This is verified by the fact that John confirmed this truth by his own testimony elsewhere in the gospels.

The bottom line is that the life of John the Baptist served as a marker for the advent of the Messiah. His life and ministry pointed to Jesus and prepared the way for Jesus to announce the inauguration of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Key Follow-Up Text:

"And the disciples asked him (Jesus), “Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” He answered, “Elijah does come, and he will restore all things. But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist." (Matthew 17:10-13)

Did the religious leaders of Israel really understand how to read and interpret the ancient prophecies about the Messiah? A deeper look at Matthew 2:5 reveals more than a simple answer.
