How Being a Public Servant Could Boost Your Career in Real Estate
For this interview, we’ve invited Roberto Montaño MBA of RE/MAX Partners in Chicago, IL to talk about his real estate journey–but we’ve got a lot more learnings from him than we’d expected.
Beto wears A LOT of hats. He’s an army veteran with a nursing degree; he also completed his Psychology degree in 2001, Economics in 2005, and got his MBA in finance in 2010 on top of nursing. He also went to law school, but it wasn’t for him. But what he found out soon later is that his heart is for community service.
In today’s episode, Beto shares the importance of finding out what freedom means to you and working towards that goal. He also provides insights into why you should build relationships in the industry and the significance of giving back to those who bring value into your life.

Quotes -
“Be the guy that people are honored to have in a room, and earn that.”
“Real estate is not a get-rich-quick thing. It’s not like a day thing. It’s the rest of your life.”
“The purpose of business is to fund a perfect life. And once you get clarity on that, once you know what life is about–maybe it’s about freedom? Maybe it’s about retiring early? Having a raise? Whatever your “why” is, real estate is an incredible vehicle for that.”
“I want to be a public servant guy. I want to give my life to community service.”
“You don’t have to talk to the president [to find inspiration and clarity], everyone’s important. [...] You just honor everybody.”
“It doesn’t matter who you are. [What matters is] What can I do for you?”
“Make yourself valuable to others. And if you do that, every single day… I try to bring that value because if there’s somebody that I can help today, and shame on me if I don’t make the phone ring.”
“Everybody adds value if they try to. I would say, find your people–find your tribe. And say, what can I do for you?”
“I’m selfish with my service. You know? The more I serve, the happier I am. Maybe I’m weird. But when you bring value, people look for you.”
“Revalue, revalue, revalue–and if you revalue, everybody will figure that out. Everybody has a self-interest. I want to grow my business. I want to get married. I want to grow a farm in Chicago.”
“[That]] Knowledge was my toolkit–for what–to bring value.”
“Attention is the currency of relationships.”
“Your clients are a reflection of you.”
