It is nocturnal and feeds on molluscs and crustaceans hidden in the sandy bottom. Distributed in tropical seas such as the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific, including the Red Sea and East Africa, from Japan in the north to northern Australia and the Solomon Islands in the south. In Australia, it is distributed from the central coast of Western Australia to the north tropics, and then to the north coast of New South Wales. In China, it is distributed in the waters of Taiwan and the South China Sea.
