Why is 3D Printing so cool?

Spreading the word about 3D printing in my area has given me pause to wonder about 3D printing. Why do we get together to talk about 3D printing? Isn't that weird? We don't get together to talk about laser cutters or drill presses, and yet 3D printers we don't bat an eye about. What justification can the phenomenon of 3D printing claim?
