Have you heard the news? Sadly, just a few weeks ago, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (ICUN) reclassified the Komodo Dragon’s conservation status from vulnerable to endangered. Why? Rising global temperatures and subsequent sea levels... 🦎🌦
As climate change impacts the world, it’s predicted we’ll see the dragons’ habitat reduced by 30% within the next 45 years. As well as rising sea levels, forest burning and deforestation are also contributing to their habitat loss and making the Komodo Dragon all the more vulnerable to poachers.
The arrival of Cecilia from Prague Zoo in 2020 heralded the start of Zoos SA plans to breed Komodo Dragons and combat their demise. 🌳
As well as our own efforts, Zoos SA supports the Komodo Survival Program. The Indonesian-based program aims to recover the management and conservation of the dragons in the wild.🌳
Komodo Dragons are found in Indonesia and live in forests and savannah habitats. With a life span of up to 30 years, the Komodo Dragon is the largest and heaviest lizard in the world and one of the few to have a venomous bite.🐾
Not exactly a fussy eater, the carnivorous lizard eats an array of food like deer, pigs, water buffalo, and anything else they can sink their teeth into. When hunting, their green textured skin provides an effective camouflage, and their quick claws and sharp teeth are used to kill their prey.🐾
By purchasing tickets to Adelaide Zoo to see Cecilia (shown in this video) you are supporting our conservation efforts and partnerships with conservation groups like the Komodo Survival Program. Together we can make a difference - thanks for your support.🦎
