Brazilian Beauty Pageant for Older Gents

Brazil’s hottest new beauty pageant is perhaps not what you’d expect.

This is the handsomest elderly man competition, which takes place in Sao Paulo every year. These strapping gents aged between 62 and 96 must participate in a host of rounds including a catwalk. Now, I know what you’re thinking... picking the finalist in this group of silver foxes would be tougher than solving the Times’ Cryptic Crossword, but there has to be a winner.

And the crown goes to… 76-year-old Jose dos Santos, who said,
“Participating and winning this little trophy means a lot to me mainly because when you’re as old as I am, it’s an achievement”

But there’s a serious side to the contest as organiser Nilton explains... “We’ve been doing this competition for 14 years, and one of its purposes is to promote self-esteem among the elderly, healthy aging, to draw the elderly from inside the house where they’re doing nothing, to come here and do some exercise, dance, even participate in”

The contest certainly seems to have achieved its aim. It’s definitely a story to tell the grandkids, and the great grandkids!
