Hey Friends,

If you don’t care about the history or science and just want to look, feel, and perform better skip to the last paragraph! We get it, we live in the ADD times and some of us just want the quick facts!

Seed Oils are Toxic Waste

Did you know cottonseed oil was considered toxic waste until the 1870’s when William Procter & James Gamble realized it could be used to produce soap. With the help of the German chemist E.C Kayser, they discovered oil hydrogenation and turned an oil that was previously a “toxic waste” into a cooking oil that resembled lard or tallow. In the early 1900’s Crisco became a staple in the American diet. Crisco (vegetable shortening) was designed in a lab for one purpose: to replace lard. Before the 1870’s fats and oils derived from animals were used to cook since the early colonial times in America. Rendered pork fat, especially from bacon, was the preferred cooking oil.

Industrial seed oils

Industrial seed oils, also known as vegetable oils, are in nearly everything. If you use common cooking oils, eat packaged foods, or dine out at most restaurants, you’re probably eating them every day. The average American consumes 5-10 tablespoons per day of industrial oils.

And you wouldn’t be alone — globally, vegetable oil production has increased more than 15% since 1900, has increased 50% in the last 20 years, and is expected to grow an additional 30% in the next 4 years. In the United States, the consumption of soybean oil alone has grown 1,000% since 1900.

The first industrial seed oils had vocal critics — the magazine Popular Science wrote that “What was garbage in 1860 was fertilizer in 1870, cattle feed in 1880, and table food and many things else in 1890” in reference to them — health claims were unregulated.
