St. Gertrude was a 13th century German Benedictine nun, mystic and theologian.

In addition to being an early devotee to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, St. Gertrude showed a "tender sympathy towards the souls in purgatory" and urged prayers for them.

She is therefore invoked for suffering souls in purgatory.

The month of November in the Catholic Church is dedicated to the souls of our departed brothers and sisters, and so we offer this prayer so that they may enter into the fullness of God's presence.

The Novena to St. Gertrude begins on November 7th and concludes on her feast day, November 16th.

This version of the Novena includes:
- A meditation on the life of St. Gertrude
- A prayer to our Lord Jesus for his extension of the graces promised to Saint Gertrude.
- St. Gertrude's Prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory
- A closing consisting of an Our Father, a Hail Mary and a Glory Be.
