What is NATO Article 4? 2 Missiles Strike Poland

What does the Iraq War, the shooting down of a Turkish military jet by Syria, the shelling of Turkish cities, the annexation of Crimea, an ISIS bombing in Turkey, the Northwestern Syria offensive, the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, and two missiles striking Poland all have in common, yep you guessed it - NATO Article 4.

Two missiles have hit Poland, killing at least two civilians. This comes at a time when tensions are high across the world. Some of the most powerful countries in the world currently have leaders discussing the Russia Ukraine conflict at the G20 Summit in Bali. The response to these missile strikes has been varied, with Ukraine claiming this is an act of war against NATO and Poland Invoking NATO Article 4, bringing all the NATO countries to the table for consultation and consensus to plan out the next steps and how to proceed.

It is worth noting that the 6 previous invocations of Article 4 have ALL lead to military operations including Operation Display Deterrence, Operation Active Fence, Black Sea naval deployments, augmentation of Turkish air defences, and materiel support to Ukraine including ordnance, armored vehicles, billions of dollars, and sanctions that have inspired further military pushback and resistance.

Ultimately, I’m very happy that Poland decided to invoke Article 4 rather than Article 5, declaring an all out collective war against Russia by NATO. With that being said, I do worry about the potential outcomes that will come from this missile attack and I fear that the right level of due diligence may not be executed to find out the truth about where they came from and why. Should this invocation lead to further military presence and posturing from the NATO countries along Russia’s border, I fear an even more pronounced and prolonged conflict that is likely to lead to death and destruction all for naught.
