Belitung, or Belitong (local language, taken from the name of a type of sea slug), formerly known as Billiton is an island off the east coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, flanked by the Gaspar Strait and the Karimata Strait.

This island is famous for white pepper (Piper sp.) which in the local language is called Sahang, and C-type minerals such as tin (Stannuum), quartz sand, white clay (kaolin), and granite. And lately, it has become an alternative natural tourist destination.

The island was formerly owned by the United Kingdom (1812), before being converted to the Netherlands, along with Bengkulu, with Singapore and New Amsterdam (now part of New York City). The main city is Tanjung Pandan.

Belitung Island is divided into 2 regencies, namely Belitung Regency, whose capital is Tanjung Pandan, and East Belitung, whose capital is Manggar.

Most of the population, especially those living in coastal areas, are very familiar with marine life which is rich in marine fish products.

Various processed foods made from fish become the daily diet of the residents. The wealth of the sea is one of the sources of livelihood for the people of Belitung.

The natural resource that is no less important for the life of the Belitung people is tin. The tin mining business has been started in the Dutch East Indies era.

The inhabitants of Belitung Island are mainly Malays (speaking the Belitung dialect) and of Hokkien and Hakka Chinese descent.
