What are the principles of international humanitarian law?

International humanitarian law (IHL) sets out rules for once war happens. States set-up these rules to protect the civilian population from hostilities.
IHL is built on three principles: Distinction, Proportionality and Precautions. All of which need to be respected for an attack to be lawful.
