Russia Ukraine War | Turkey President Erdogan Demands "Concrete Steps" To Support Sweden's NATO Bid
Turkey has told Sweden to work towards countering terrorism threats in order to get NATO membership. Sweden PM Ulf Kristersson visited Ankara, in hopes of persuading Turkey to drop its opposition to Sweden joining NATO. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that he sincerely wishes that Sweden’s NATO membership is realised. Erdogan had accused Sweden and its neighbour Finland of harbouring Kurdish rebel groups that are outlawed in Turkey. The Swedish PM said he understood Turkey’s fight against “terrorism” and promised to respond to its requests. Sweden and Finland applied to join the Western military alliance after Russia launched its war in Ukraine. Turkey was the only one of NATO's 30 member states to block their bids initially. Will Turkey let Sweden and Finland join the NATO military alliance?
