Major Prophets of the Latter Rain Movement

One of the most fundamental doctrines of the Latter Rain movement that was impacted by William Branham’s extra-biblical theology was the five-fold ministry doctrine. Leaders in Latter Rain pushed the idea that five roles of the church would be empowered in the last days, and the world would once again see a restoration of biblical apostles, prophets, evangelists, teachers, and pastors. Then, after claiming to be gifted with these roles, men with ill intent began teaching that these roles were given unnatural authority over rank-and-file members.

William Branham, who was both a primary architect of the movement and a person claiming to be a “prophet” in the five-fold ministry, did this by claiming that a “major prophet” meant “superior prophet”, and then empowered his own role with all five of the “offices” of the five-fold ministry. Branham apparently never read the books of the major prophets in the Bible, and began claiming that “God never sent two major prophets to the Church at the same time”, and then began claiming that the “major prophets” — who lived at the same time and mentioned many of the same events — did not.

The truth is that the designation of “major prophets” and “minor prophets” of the Bible is not a label of superior authority. Major prophets are categorized by the length of the scrolls that we have available to read today. Most of the work for the “minor prophets” has been lost to time.
