Ronald Reagan won a greater fraction of electoral votes (94%) than any President save for George Washington (who won 100%). Reagan was elected in a period of unprecedented inflation, recession, and looming global war. But America didn't embrace the Republican party - the House was majority Democrat during all of Reagan's eight years. They embraced Reagan himself. The key to his success was his optimism, not in politicians and government, but in people and markets.
