Canada: Former cabinet ministers call on government to end to immigration detention in provincial jails

At a news conference on Parliament Hill, former federal cabinet ministers Lloyd Axworthy and Allan Rock call on the federal government to end the Canada Border Service Agency’s (CBSA) practice of detaining refugee claimants and migrants in provincial correctional facilities across the country. They are joined by Abdelrahman Elmady (Egyptian-born human rights activist and immigrant previously detained in Canada), Sara Maria Gomez Lopez (Mexico-born human rights activist and immigrant previously detained in Canada), Samer Muscati (associate director, Disability Rights Division, Human Rights Watch) and Ketty Nivyabandi (secretary general, Amnesty International Canada).
