MINIMALISM, a term that from 1970 onwards came to designate compositional techniques based on the repetition of small rhythmic and melodic cells, often over harmonies built by almost static triads. Its best-known promoters were Steve Reich, Terry Riley and Philip Glass. Conceptually, it can be said that there are minimalist aspects in the music of Antiquity (India and Bali for example), in the works of the French Éric Satie and even in Webern, from the second school of Vienna.
