A gibbon is any of approximately 20 species of small apes found in Southeast Asia's tropical forests. Gibbons, like the great apes (gorillas, orangutans, chimps, and bonobos), have a human-like build but lack higher cognitive abilities and self-awareness. They also have longer arms, dense hair, and a throat sac for amplifying sound, which distinguishes them from great apes. Gibbon voices are loud, musical, and can travel long distances. The "great call," which is used as a territorial marker by both sexes, is the most distinctive vocalisation. It is usually a duet in which the female leads and the male joins in with less-complex notes.
