An Uncontrolled Tongue Leads to Disaster pt 1

James starts out chapter three with a pretty strong instruction. We should not become teachers of the word because the judgment against us will become much greater. God provides the gift of teaching to those He has called to teach. As God calls everyone, He will gift them according to their calling and provide every need. James emphasis on teaching is great because the direction we will lead someone in is critical to their salvation.
James uses several examples for the taming of the tongue. Our words can direct the path of the congregation. They can point people closer to God. Or, they can push people farther away from God. We need to be cautious of our tongue because it is powerful. It is used to express emotions like love, hate, sorrow, fear, distrust, malice and joy. As teachers of the word, we must speak with God’s wisdom. This wisdom comes from the word of God. Jesus tells us in Matthew 12:37 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” We should always strive to be in God’s grace and our words should reflect our actions through the word of God. We are at risk of great judgment if we do not take this instruction very seriously.
