Society depends on the myth of eternal growth, endless production, escalating consumption.
Now as the World economy suffers and we look back on a bygone era of opportunity, one where someone on an average wage could afford an adequate standard of living, own property and raise a family - promises of a similar lifestyle through education and application seem like a pipe dream.
The UK is clutching at it's billion pound "unicorn" companies, as they fly off and leave after cash injections from abroad. They say now if we pledge 5 per cent of our pensions we can reap the rewards from these home based "unicorns".
Tax rises are on the horizon, and the chancellor squabbles with Kwarteng in a finger pointing game to rile up supporters.
Food banks, warm banks and a impoverished middle class will now paint the landscape of Britain - a country with the highest wage disparity in the world.
We have our own oligarchs.
