I have heard the name Mainz because I have read two brief German histories, and I probably remember that it was established by the Romans in BC. During the Holy Roman Empire, it was first one of the seven emperors (Archbishop of Mainz) The resident, later independent as a free city-state, established the Republic of Mainz during the French Revolution, which played a pivotal role in German history.
