There is a cohort of leftists who side with Russia and view them as anti-imperialist. But this ignores the LONG history of Russian imperialism. A caller from Virginia reminds us of that history.

I'm Will and I'm from Virginia. And yeah I just wanted to call and talk about Ukraine for a second. maybe degrowth if there's enough time. But I guess the thing that I wanted to say most is that Russia has been very good at propaganda historically. And I think that bleeds a lot into how people on the left see Ukraine because there's a broad narrative they've been very successful at crafting. Which is that Russia never did any colonialism. Where our hands are entirely clean. We're you know the sort of we support all leftists around the world and we're Anti-Imperialist. And it's like no that's not what the history says. and it's especially relevant in Ukraine. And how the whole thing works out. because see Russia did a lot of settler colonialism. And the Soviets themselves did a lot of settler colonialism. Because basically everything on the other side of the Urals belongs to Native Siberians and or Native Americans if you count Alaska. So you know the Russian Empire did all of the same things as all the other European Empires. They just did it in Central Asia and in the caucuses and in Siberia. And also in the United States of America. I mean that's how we got Alaska. And it's important to understand in Ukraine especially because they also did the same things with their you know quote-unquote Slavic Brothers. And there's a long history of Russian settler colonialism in Ukraine. And also in the Baltic especially in the Soviet period. And it's important to understand in the context of Crimea especially because see both the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union ethnically cleanse the native Crimean Tatars. And so you know when we're talking about the referendums that they hold. where they say you know oh there are all these Russians and they want to be part of Russia. It's like no, those are the settlers that land doesn't belong to them. It's not really their right to say you know it's not their right to say we're going to take this land from the Tatars and give it to Russia and have them under Russian control. And you see now that Crimea is under Russian control the Tatars are facing repression from you know this Russian fascist violence again. Because obviously, the Tatars don't want to live as second-class Citizens on their own land.
