Prepping For A High Tensile Barbed Wire Fence | Developing The Property | Fencing

In this video we prep for our barbed wire fence and mark out our homesite for the excavator coming next week!

Hi - We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from the ground up!

We decided to go with Bekaert 4 prong 5” spaced 15.5 gauge high tensile barbed wire. Bekaert has some great educational videos and information on choosing your fence…check them out here:

We will be doing 5 strands of this along the entire perimeter, except the very back property line which already has barbed wire that was installed by the ranch behind us. We chose Bekaert because of it’s availability and affordability plus their manufacturing is done here in the US and that’s really important to us! We chose high tensile because it’s made to keep out (or in) cattle and bison.

We’ve got some pretty big free ranging cattle that come through the neighborhood and we did see signs that they had been on our property. Cattle can do a lot of damage to structures because they will lean and rub on things. We are also hoping our fence will keep out javelina, coyote, and possibly deer. We plan on doing the 5 strands in a graduated fashion (kinda like the way field fencing is) with the strands tighter together near the bottom and further apart near the top.

Once again, thanks for following along with us and we hope to inspire you to live your best life, whatever that might mean for you!
