Emma hosts Ryan Grim, DC Bureau Chief at The Intercept, to discuss some of his recent coverage of Tuesday’s midterm results. Ryan Grim dives right into the mandate to fight for reproductive rights that were delivered by voters this week, walking through how the Roe decision impacted this election (and maybe saved the Senate for the Democrats), and why – even if Republicans win the house – a campaign to codify Roe into law could take advantage of the vulnerable standing of countless House Republicans, not to mention helping bolster the push for centrist Dems like Manchin and Sinema to finally come out against the filibuster. Next, Grim and Emma parse through the impact of the New York Democratic machine on the massive losses felt by the left across the state on Tuesday, highlighted by DCCC chair Sean Patrick Maloney bigfooting progressive Mondaire Jones out of the race only to lose to the GOP, first walking through the impact of Cuomo’s governorship in shaping the NY legislature around a center-left and right-wing alliance, and how Jay Jacobs (Chair of NYS Democratic Committee) has carried the torch. Wrapping up, they discuss the incredible success of the progressive branch of the Democratic party during this election cycle and discuss where the future of progressive electoral leverage and power lies.

Friend of the show D.C bureau chief of The Intercept Ryan Grimm. Hello Ryan. Thanks for taking the time to come on the show and I'm sure you have a million things to do. Oh, always a pleasure. Oh good. Well we I feel like and you too. But I feel like we had largely avoided the Mandate discourse until your article. So I really appreciate you bringing the word mandate back into the conversation. and not the vaccine kind. No, not that kind. but we are talking about genuine medical Freedom here. Which is abortion. and you wrote a piece up at The Intercept about how you know exit polls have indicated abortion was the top concern that really put Democrats over the top in terms of what was what a lot of Voters were prioritizing at The Ballot Box. and we saw Kansas earlier in the year ballot initiative affirming this. and then on Election Day Vermont Kentucky as well Michigan as well. the voters are making their opinions clear about abortion. I mean that the major is too. oh, I didn't yeah Montana as well. right Montana as well. so it's just I mean that the major Takeaway on a national level from the results of these midterms. it's the thing that you know changed it from you know 30 seat pickup. which was what was being projected by a lot of these prognosticators. and Republicans were talking earlier in the year about like a 50-seat pickup. I think the point that I was making earlier this week and that AOC actually made last night in an interview with me is that this also points to the value and the power of Full Employment as a policy. you know over and against the focus on inflation is worth teasing apart. but I think separate from that if you imagine a world in which the Supreme Court does what the Supreme Court has done for the last 50 years which has not overturned Roe v Wade. I think you're probably looking at several dozen seats lost by democrats. the Republicans picking up and probably picking up some Senate seats too. probably Arizona. probably Nevada. and so in that sense that's the Gap. like that's the Mandate. that the difference was in that ruling. and people through and people's reactions to it. and so then there's a question of well what do you do with it?''
