South Korea says missile debris from North Korea a ‘Soviet-era weapon’

South Korea said on November 9, 2022, that the salvaged debris of a North Korean missile was part of a Soviet-era SA-5 surface-to-air missile. The missile, which was among more than 20 missiles the North fired on November 2, landed near South Korean waters for the first time, triggering air-raid sirens on Ulleung island. Following the barrage of weapons demonstrations, Pyongyang fired at least one ballistic missile into the sea on November 9 that was detected by Seoul and Japan.
