Non-Denominational Islam | Introduction

Most of you heard of Sunni, Shia, Sufi, Salafi sects in Islam, however I’m sure most of you haven’t heard of non-denominational Islam, so what is it?

During the Prophet Muhammad's period, him and his companions used no other terms apart from 'Islam' as a religious identity. So why do most Muslims use such terms these days and are there any Muslims who don't?
