[ News ] China media: 31 people detained for coral poaching

Chinese authorities in Fujian Province have reportedly detained 31 people on suspicion of poaching or illegal sale of coral from waters near Japan.

Local media say the suspects were taken into custody around November, and are from a district with a port where poachers' boats are allegedly based.

Authorities are said to have confiscated 38 kilograms of red coral worth more than 2.5 million dollars.

Local officials told NHK all the seized coral came from waters near Japan.

The Chinese government has recently been showing a tougher stance on coral poaching, cracking down on poachers in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.
