Off-Duty CPD officer shot in road rage incident on northwest side

An off-duty CPD probationary officer was shot in the face after an apparent road rage incident on the city's northwest side this afternoon, authorities said.

The manhunt is still underway and we'll update this post as we know more.

The incident began shortly after 3:00 p.m. near the intersection of W. Addison Street and N. Elston Avenue on the city's northwest side in the Irving Park neighborhood, just over the border from the Avondale neighborhood.

Chicago Police Supt. David Brown told the media that the female probationary officer was in her personal vehicle and stopped near the above intersection when someone in a black SUV rear-ended her. The SUV then pushed her vehicle, according to Brown.

Neither the off-duty officer nor the offender exited their vehicle at that time, but Supt. Brown said then of the offender, "...he was still in the car and shot our officer in the face." The suspect then fled.

The off-duty officer was rushed to Illinois Masonic Medical Center where she was initially listed in serious to critical condition. According to the Chicago Fire Department, she did not lose consciousness and was alert during transport to the hospital.

Supt. Brown further noted that her injuries, while serious, did not seem to be life-threatening. "Thank God," Brown added.

It is unclear if there were any additional shots fired in the area, but it is being reported that the off-duty officer did not fire a weapon nor had a weapon on her at the time of the incident.

At the time of this writing, no offenders are in custody. Officers and investigators continue to comb the area.
