When amateur astronomer Alan Dyer looked up at the night sky from his backyard in Strathmore, Canada, on October 12, 2021, he was treated to a rare sight: an unusual kind of double aurora. This time lapse film, covering 33 minutes of lightshow, offers the most complete footage of this pairing ever captured. It has now helped space physicists tease out clues to what causes one of the auroras: The red rays are telltale signs of electrons raining down through the atmosphere, a new study reports.
