Ang simula ng pagpipinta ay isang pangitain na naranasan ni Faustina noong 1931 habang naninirahan sa isang kumbento sa Plock, Poland. Nagpakita sa kaniya si Jesus sa kaniyang selda na may suot na puting kasuotan, isinulat niya sa kaniyang talaarawan: “Ang isang kamay ay nakataas bilang tanda ng pagpapala, ang isa naman ay humipo sa kasuutan sa dibdib. Mula sa ilalim ng kasuotan, na bahagyang nakatali sa dibdib, may lumalabas na dalawang malalaking sinag, ang isa ay pula, ang isa naman ay maputla."
