Emperor Haile Selassie presents trust prize to President Senghor of Senegal, 3rd November 1973

President Leopold Senghor of Senegal has been presented with the 1973 Haile Selassie Prize Trust Award. President Senghor was presented with the Award by the Emperor on Friday (November 2). It consisted of 70,000 Ethiopian dollars (about GPB14,000 sterling), a gold medal and a diploma.

The citation for President Senghor's Award praised him for his contribution to African art and culture and to the study of African heritage and civilisation. It also commended his writings on negritude which, the citation said, "inspired a whole generation of other scholars in research into ???'s contribution to world preservation of the African cultural heri???"

The ceremony was watched by Archbishop Milkers of Cyprus, who was spending five days in Ethiopia as a guest of emperor Haile Selassie. Dr. Richard Pankhurst, Director of the Institute of Ethiopian studies at Award. Dr. Pankhurst, the son of the English suffragette leader, received 15,000 Ethiopian dollars (about GPB3,000 sterling), a gold medal and a diploma. The award was made in recognition of Dr. Pahkhurst's work on various topics of Ethiopian history.
