The way your parents lived 50 years ago doesn't apply to today's society. Buying a house and going to college used to work for your parents because it used to be affordable. Not today

The education system hasn't evolved in over 100 years. The education system has children seated in lines, working independently
(without being able to ask classmates for help) preparing children to work at assembly lines for 8 hours straight. Which used to be kind of o.k. back then. Definitely NOT today
