The world poet of America, Walt Whitman is the modern-day equivalent of Homer, Virgil, Dante, and Shakespeare. His independently released poetry collection, "Leaves of Grass," is a significant moment in American literature.
-
Whitman ponders his own existence and the pointlessness of life in "Oh Me! Oh Life!" He laments the "endless trains of the faithless," speaks of towns populated by the ignorant, and berates himself for not being any better. He bemoans the fact that life never goes exactly as he plans it to and takes note of the "sordid hordes" around him who are also struggling to get by. He feels connected to them and has spent just as many "useless years" looking for a far-off concept.
He responds at the conclusion of the poem.
