Barnie van der Walt did his national service at the Army Gymnasium and after that joined the SA Police. As an accomplished acrobat, he became a PT Instructor. He then joined the SA Railway Police becoming involved in PT as well as leading the acrobat team displaying their world-class skills at many events before being drafted back into the SA Police because of the 1986 Almagation.
