2022 Christmas Day Lesson (Luke 2:1-15)
Pastor Randall shares 5 ideas from Luke 2:1-15: You Will Find Him (#4 ETB; Winter 2022.23 Lifeway) for 12.25.2022.
Reading the Christmas Message from Luke, we can confirm the message of God’s promise and salvation through Jesus, as well as God’s faithfulness to all people. The purpose of Luke is to seek to persuade others to have faith in Jesus.
Read LUKE 2:1-11 and the comments on Session 04 found in your copy of the ETB Personal Study Guide. I have written some devotional thoughts and questions on today’s passages below.
Summary 01: Luke2:1-14
One of the most dramatic and divine interventions into history comes with the angel’s announcement to the shepherds on the night of Jesus’ birth. Three significant truths come from this:
V.10: Good news of great joy will be for ALL people…the first announcement of the “gospel” or good news.
V.11: The One whose coming was heralded is given three significant titles: Savior, Christ, and Lord.
V.14: Translated best this way…”Peace comes to people who are the objects of God’s good will.”
Question: Do you think of Jesus in terms of these descriptions?
Savior? Christ or Messiah (Promised One)? or Lord?
Summary 02: Read Luke 2:15-19
The lowest class of people received the highest theological and hopeful message ever. The fullness of the good news goes to the poor just as it would to anyone. The shepherds were not only the first to hear the proclamation of the good news, but they were the first human beings to tell others about it. Plain speech can always be used to express significant truth.
Question: Why did God choose peasants or poor shepherds to be the first to hear this good news?
What hesitancies do you have to share good news when you have it?
Conclusions: Luke conveys the historical setting and circumstances of Jesus birth and reinforces two themes from his gospel: Jesus was the fulfillment of the Jewish Messianic hopes; and God is sovereign over all of history.
Quotable: “God looks at the hearts of men and not at their incomes…to be godless and covetous is disgraceful, but it is no disgrace to be poor.” J.C. Ryle
Prayer: Lord, Thank You for the good news that Jesus is born and is Savior, Christ and Lord in my life. Amen.
I hope you’ll join us next week as we continue our study of the Book of JOHN and discover God’s purpose for your life by having faith in Jesus.
