Election Day Winners & Losers: What to Make of Midterm Results
It’s the day after a critical Midterm Elections, as more or less as we expected, we still have no real clarity of who won, who lost, and if the balance of power will shift, or remain status quo.
Many races are still too close to call at this point. However, one thing that does seem apparent is that the Republicans are poised to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives. That means Nancy Pelosi will lose her seat as House Speaker, and she’ll only be able to petulantly tear up speeches in her own office. But that said, we’re looking at narrow margins here when it comes to Republicans retaking control in the House.
The question still is what will become of the U.S. Senate. It’s too soon to say. For example, we now know that former-NFL and UGA football star Hershel Walker and Sen. Warnock are moving on to a runoff election, after being neck-and-neck in their race for the state’s seat in the Senate. And we still don’t know when we’ll find out about states like Arizona and Nevada. However we also know in Pennsylvania, Dr. Mehmet Oz has already conceded to John Fetterman which means Democrats won the seat.
Meanwhile, not surprisingly, Florida is now a nearly all-red state. Republican Governor Ron DeSantis handily defeated his opponent Charlie Crist to win re-election. As did Republican Senator Marco Rubio, who will hang on to his Senate seat for six more years. And what’s interesting is, while Ron DeSantis narrowly won his first election in 2018 by a mere 30,000 votes, this time around he won with over 1.5 million votes.
And in other states, a couple of hard-Left gubernatorial candidates suffered hard losses, with both Beto O’Rourke losing in Texas and Stacey Abrams losing her bid for Governor of Georgia.
The main takeaway here: This is not over. We’re still waiting on results out of some big states. And regardless of whether it’s a wave or a whisper, if the Republicans can take back control of the Senate, it will be a major change to the balance of power in Washington. We will continue to follow the results in every state, keep you updated, and offer our thoughts on what these outcomes mean.
Today’s full Sekulow broadcast includes more analysis of the Midterm results. We’re also joined by ACLJ Senior Advisor for National Security and Foreign Policy Ric Grenell who gave us his take on the election results so far.
