World leaders have congratulated Rishi Sunak on becoming the UK’s new prime minister, with some expressing their hope for stability after a turbulent few weeks.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent “special Diwali wishes” to Mr Sunak, who has Indian family and is the UK’s first British Asian PM, adding their countries would “transform our historic ties into a modern partnership."
