National Spain Day commemorates the day in 1492 when the first Columbus expedition claimed the Americas for Spain. The day is a national holiday in Spain and Madrid, the capital of Spain, usually celebrates with a military parade led by the king and the prime minister. The celebration was first started in 1935 and while the Colonial Period has long gone, people around the word take pride in their Hispanic heritage.
