Crowds were seen outside the country's Bushehr airport on Monday (November 7) where fans flocked to welcome the national beach soccer team players - but there were no patriotic chants or songs. Anti-government demonstrations erupted in Iran in September, prompted by the death of a Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, in police custody. A widely followed activist Twitter account, 1500TASVIR, said the soccer players refused to sing the national anthem of the Islamic Republic at the beginning of their semifinal match against the United Arab Emirates.
